Die Kombuis

In South African tradition the kombuis (kitchen) is an important part of the house. We’ve brought Die Kombuis across the miles to share the tradition!

In 1652, a Dutch expedition of settlers under the command of Jan van Riebeeck founded the first permanent settlement in South Africa near the Cape of Good Hope. Among other valuable traditions and goods, they brought the Dutch language to South Africa, which over the years evolved into Afrikaans.
Kombuis is the Afrikaans word for kitchen, in Dutch it goes a little further and refers to a kitchen on a ship. An interesting way to look at how Dutch influenced today's Afrikaans language.
Our goal is to unite South Africans and encourage non-South Africans with heart for the country to get together. We organize events and sell (home-made) South African products, so that the rich South African culture is spread to all parts of the world.
